There are currently 36 hospitals serving communities throughout Maine, including 17 non-profit general acute care hospitals (ACH), 16 non-profit critical access hospitals (CAH), two private psychiatric hospitals, and one acute rehabilitation hospital. Most of Maine’s hospitals are owned by or are affiliated with one of the four health systems currently doing business in Maine. The information in the table below is as of June 2026 and reflects the historical and current relationships between Health Systems and Maine Hospitals. The table includes the Health System names, the Type of Hospital (ACH, CAH, etc.), the Hospital Name as of 2018, the years associated with a particular Health System (color-coded), the Hospital Name as of 2026, and accompanying notes to mark changes because of mergers, acquisitions and closures.
